Life Was Hard

The Story of Elizabeth*

My name is Elizabeth Wanjeri. I am 20 years old. I live in Nairobi, Kibera, Kianda, Forty Two. We live six people in one room, my mother, brother, sister and her daughter, and me and my daughter also. I have completed primary education and joined secondary education up to form two. I didn’t continue my education for lack of school fees.

That was in 1998, and in the following year I got pregnant and my boy friend denied responsibility. He said he was young and he was not ready for marriage. I had to carry my own cross. My mother also denied me saying she could not raise me and then raise my child. That was when I decided abortion was the answer.

I looked for a job in a café and raised enough money to secure an abortion. When I went to the lady who did it, it did not succeed. Then the second time she refused to try again and said she was afraid I would die in her hands. She chased me away after taking all my money. She later searched my mother and told her about it and my mother told me if I was to do abortion I should leave her house because she was not ready to bury someone. So I decided to give birth.

After 9 months I gave birth to a baby girl. That was in the year 2000, March 20th. I gave her the name Margaret Wanjeri. Life was hard. I used to sleep on a couch with her since there was no bed. We didn’t have food. I would go for 3 days without food. When she reached 1 year, I could leave her home with my mother to go and wash people’s clothes in order to get money for food. It was hard for me and her.

Then one day Doug came to visit my sister and her daughter. He decided to help her better her life. That’s when I came in and some other girls and he decided to give us another chance. I was very happy. My mother was also very happy about it. I now thank God for [Moja Moja] and the teacher and the other people who will be involved. May God bless them richly.

I would like to tell other girls who have not ruined their lives that they should take their studies seriously and achieve something in their lives because boyfriends will use you and dump you.
